Classes begin the week of October 4th and meet weekly. A full schedule will be sent to all participants after registration along with meeting information, but classes will run through the end of January. A spring semester will begin in March and have a separate registration period.
PLEASE SEE THE BELOW IMAGE FOR THE SCHEDULE FOR EACH CLASS!
All courses have no prerequisites unless otherwise noted and are open to all students. Our courses will leverage the exciting Tynker and Blackbird Code platforms which enables students to continue to participate in coding programs outside of their class time with MSOE instructors. All of our instructors are MSOE students studying computer science, computer engineering or software engineering.
All courses will be offered in person at the We Energies STEM Center at MSOE. There are no virtual options offered at this time.
Please e-mail dGF5bG9yZSB8IG1zb2UgISBlZHU= for scholarship opportunities for high need students by 10/1 as well as any questions.
Each class will meet 13 times. When you register for a course here, the $60 fee includes all 13 sessions of instruction, 24/7 access to coding club content and bonus content, and snacks at every class.
Please be sure to reference grade prerequisites noted above. We recommend students stay in grade levels they are associated with and students can always be moved up a class level if they are advanced. No prior coding experience is required for any course.
An introduction to block programming for beginners in upper elementary grades with a focus on game design, animation, and music.
A fast-paced introduction to block programming for coding beginners where they create simple interactive programs with a focus on game design.
This session is being offered as a Girls Coding Club. All genders are welcome, but the course is intended to be a female-focused space and will have predominantly female mentors and instructors assigned.
An introduction to Python for intermediate or advanced coders in upper middle or high school with a focus on game design.
FAQ's & SAFETY POLICIES
Is a computer required for this course?
Bringing your own device is helpful so it's ready to go for any after class learning you may choose to do, but MSOE has laptops for use while in the Center. A computing device (Chromebooks are OK!) with a keyboard is recommended. Note that iPads will not work with some courses.
What if I cannot make all sessions?
Tynker and Blackbird Code(our coding class platform) can be accessed 24/7. Students can contact their instructors if they will be missing class to know what lessons to work on.
What does the registration fee include?
It includes ALL sessions of the course, any required materials, and snacks for in person students.
What does a coding club session look like?
Clubs are designed to be fun learning environments where students can collaborate with each other and collegiate mentors. This looks different than a classroom setting - most classes kickoff with some guidelines and light instruction with what is being covered that day and then students work at their own pace to complete activities. You can expect music, snacks, and a more casual group experience that our coding club participants have enjoyed over the past 5 years!
Policies may change as the semester goes on and pandemic response guidance from the City of Milwaukee and MSOE adapts. At this time, participants and their families should expect to adhere to the following requirements.
An extended safety policy document will be shared with all participants a week ahead of the first day of class along with all other information.
Masks are currently required - regardless of vaccination status - for all individuals on the MSOE campus at this time
If you or your student(s) require an accommodation, you must contact us as least 5 business days prior to your program start date so our University safety team can determine if an appropriate accommodation can be made. If you reach out accordingly and an accommodation is not able to be made, a full refund would be issued.
Any individuals who arrive to a program and indicate an attendee cannot wear a mask will not be able to be permitted to attend the program. A refund will not be issued for this instance as all safety procedures have been clearly communicated in advance for programs.
Vaccine & Testing Requirements
There is no requirement for proof of vaccination and/or negative tests at this time due to the age group being served.
Our University wide updates along with policies, including gatherings and facial coverings, can be found here: https://www.msoe.edu/about-msoe/raider-return/
