One of the most celebrated violinists of his generation, Augustin Hadelich returns to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for Mendelssohn’s luminous Violin Concerto, a work of lyric beauty and emotional depth that remains one of the repertoire’s most beloved showpieces.
Music Director Ken-David Masur leads Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, a sweeping, deeply personal work built around the motto “free but happy.” Clara Schumann described it as “one beat of the heart, each movement a jewel,” capturing the symphony’s seamless unity and quiet intensity.
The program opens with Detlev Glanert’s Vexierbild, meaning “Hidden Image,” a modern reflection on Brahms’s Third. Drawing directly from Brahms’s themes while refracting them through a contemporary lens, Glanert calls it “my own Brahms,” creating a compelling dialogue across centuries.
What to expect:
• A masterclass performance by Grammy Award winner Augustin Hadelich
• Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, a cultural touchstone heard everywhere from Olympic routines to popular recordings
• A striking contemporary companion in Glanert’s Vexierbild, a work that responds directly to Brahms while standing firmly on its own
This is a program about legacy, reinterpretation, and the enduring power of melody.
