Child Gun Violence Memorial Concert
The Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra invites you to "A Journey Towards Hope" The 5th Annual Memorial Concert for Missing & Departed Children. Our 2025 concert will take place at Central United Methodist Church on Sunday December 14th from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm. The address is 625 North 25th Street, Milwaukee, WI. 53223.
This concert is held every year, one week before Christmas, to try and provide a space for families to grieve and unburden themselves before having to be around family. Although the focus is deceased children, by extension, anyone else who has lost someone should also attend this concert.
The December 14th concert program contains Norwegian; French; and Black American composers. Each from different eras. In particular, we will be performing a Funeral March written by Edvard Greig memorializing the death of a young composer friend. We will also be performing Maurice Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin (Couperin's tomb)"; written to memorialize friends Ravel lost during World War I. The concert will conclude with Margaret Bond's depiction of the 16th street church bombing and the civil rights movement.
The Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra is an arm of The Black String Triage Ensemble organization. Musicians in the symphony orchestra are a mix of high school students; college students; music educators; professional musicians; and community members. The Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra is the only Black-led orchestra in the state of Wisconsin. The key purpose of the Black Diaspora Symphony Orchestra is to put Black and Latin composers at the forefront of symphonic music and make symphonic music relevant to everyday life.
