Yet across the country, communities are working to give them new life.Concrete Futures for Modernist Buildings, an event hosted by the Heritage Network at MK Gallery, Milton Keynes, will explore how local groups and grassroots organisations can transform “at risk” modernist buildings into places of shared value, creativity, and care.Through talks, tours, case studies, and conversations, we’ll look at how communities can reclaim buildings that are often seen as outdated and unviable, and transform them into vibrant social assets. From repurposed civic centres and reimagined housing blocks to community‑run cultural spaces, we’ll explore possible community-led futures for our much-loved modernist buildings.We’re bringing together architects, activists, heritage specialists and community leaders who are reshaping the narrative of modernism from one of decline to one of renewal and pride in place.
