- **Event Name**: Shackleton Ground Run (Ysterplaat)
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 27 Jun, 2026 at 09:00 am
- **Event Description**: Avro Shackleton MR1 named after Ernest Shackleton, and later improved to the MR2 that were all tail draggers. The SAAF and RAF required numerous upgrades that included a tricycle undercarriage for improved cross-wind landings. The wings had to have wingtip fuel tanks for an extended range, a clear-vision cockpit canopy and improved crew facilities for the expanded crew of 10 - 14; numerous system and equipment upgrades were also required. It could carry the SARO Mk3 rescue boat that can be seen at the Museum, and was replaced with Lindholme Gear (1 -5 cylinder-shaped containers joined together by lengths of floating rope).

The Avro Shackleton is a long-range maritime patrol aircraft that was required due to the potential expansion of the Soviet Navy's submarine force, to patrol sea lanes and to assist with rescues at sea. The South African Air Force obtained 8 of these aircraft to safeguard the route around the Cape coast.

In February 1957, 41 members of 35 Squadron arrived at the A. V. Roe factory in Woodford for training on the new Shackleton MR3, call sign ‘Pelican’. 35 Squadron formerly acquired the Shackleton in1957-1958. 1722 was first flown on 7 February 1958 retired in 1984 and last flew in 2007.

The "Friends of the SAAF museum" Ysterplaat have the pleasure and honour of inviting every aviation enthusiast and others to witness another one of our spectacular OPEN DAYS with a twist at Ysterplaat Air Force Base. This is something you do not want to miss as it's an iconic aircraft with 4 engines and with contra-rotating propellers. She is one of only 2 left in the world that feeds the wind through her propellers where ours is by far the most active. The sound and the smell is just goosebump material.

You will be welcomed on arrival by the passionate volunteers showing you were to park and where to enter the museum. You will need to sign in and then we ask you from the bottom of our hearts to please give a donation no matter how small. Our Grand Old Lady is a very thirsty lady and she continuously needs topping up of her tanks so we can keep hearing the roars of her RR/Griffon engines. We have card machines so no need to scratch around for cash at the last minute.

Whats available you may ask. Well. Barista Coffee to begin with, cooldrinks, juices, snacks and then later on Craft Beer from the Shackleton Breweries company and award winning wine from Stettyn Family Vineyards for you to taste and purchase. Then of course our world famous boerewors rolls and delicious gourmet beef and cheese burgers will be on sale for a steal.

Just please try to be at museum by 9 am. It does take a while to get a large excited crowd through the museum before we all head off to watch our Shackleton break the morning silence. Once the Ground Run is complete, you will get a chance to take a walk through her and other SAAF museum aircraft.

The museum is open for visitors of all ages, from 09h00 till 14h00, every Saturday. There is plenty to eat, the best boerie rolls and burger, as well as liquid refreshments. We are card and wheelchair friendly.
