- **Event Description**: The Alouette III of 22 squadron performed one of the most dramatic rescues when the SA Seafarer, ran aground in the middle of the night on 1 July 1966 off Green Point lighthouse. This is South Africa's oldest lighthouse (12 April 1824) located on Mouille Point. The Alouettes flew in 45 kt winds and driving rain with waves that splashed up against the Seafarer over and into the helicopters. All 76 people were lifted off the pitching and rolling Seafarer in 3 hours.

To see this aircraft and 14 others visit the South African Air Force Museum on Saturday, situated in Piet Grobler Street, just off Koeberg Road, Ysterplaat. If not sure where we are, then best is to Google 'SAAF Museum, Ysterplaat', and it will take you directly to the museum. When passing through the base gate drive directly forward, the museum will be in front of you, but you will have to turn left and go around to the right to take you to the parking area. The museum is open for visitors of all ages, from 09h00 till 14h00, every Saturday, with the last tour to the No 3 & 4 Hangar leaving at 13h00. There is plenty to eat, the best boerie rolls and burger, as well as liquid refreshments. We are card and wheelchair friendly.
