Foraged Tree Bark Harvest

Discover what it means when we say the "bark is slipping." Learn by doing as you help us bring in the harvest of edible tree barks during this hands-on, free flowing community foraging project.

In the class you’ll:

• review winter identification of shagbark hickory, wild black cherry, and slippery elm, and explore the uses of each.
• use draw knives and other tools to remove the outer bark of wild black cherry and slippery elm trees, then peel out the desirable inner bark.
• help make shagbark hickory syrup (from the bark “shags”) and head home with a 4-ounce jar of syrup.
• try slippery elm bark tea.
• delve into the tradition of using bitters for digestive health and enhancing beverages, then learn by doing as you transform the inner bark of wild black cherry into a 4-ounce jar of in-process bitters to finish at home.
• tour our foraged pantry.
