Foster plays Lilian Steiner, a renowned Parisian psychiatrist whose carefully ordered world begins to unravel when she learns of the sudden death of one of her patients. Convinced that the death was not a suicide but a murder, Lilian begins her own investigation, drawing her into a world of secrets, unanswered questions and personal revelations.

Blending mystery, dark humour and psychological drama, A Private Life explores the boundaries between truth and perception, professional detachment and personal involvement. The film showcases Jodie Foster's remarkable ability to bring depth, intelligence and vulnerability to a complex character, in her first major French-language leading role.

Directed by Rebecca Zlotowski, A Private Life premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it was presented in the Official Selection Out of Competition. The film features an outstanding cast including Daniel Auteuil, Virginie Efira and Mathieu Amalric.
