Dopo essere salito alla ribalta nella scena dei jazz loft, negli Anni 70 a New York, e aver co-fondato il World Saxophone Quartet, il sassofonista di origine californiana ha continuato a creare una vasta ed incredibilmente ampia varietà di musica.

Fonde sonorità gospel, free jazz, afro-caraibico, blues, soul, oltre ai meravigliosi standard del jazz classico. Il timbro vivace di Murray, l’intonazione insuperabile, il senso dello swing, i toni malinconici, la potenza improvvisativa e l’ingegno, lo rendono una delle voci più importanti della musica contemporanea.

Il suo nuovo quartetto esegue principalmente composizioni originali e Murray offre ai tre giovani musicisti ampio spazio.

L’ultimo album, Birdly Serenade, è stato pubblicato da Impulse! nell’aprile 2025.
