CASTING
BEATRICE, Female 20 – 30. Niece of Leonato and cousin of Hero. Quick-witted, verbally adept, beautiful, generous, and good-hearted. Uses her wit to mock and tease. Lead role.
BENEDICK, Male 25 – 35. Gentleman soldier and friend of Don Pedro and Claudio. Handsome, witty, mocks other people with elaborate jokes and puns. Very critical of women. Physically fit. Lead role.
HERO, Female 18 – 25, beautiful young daughter of Leonato and cousin to Beatrice. Lovely, gentle, and innocent. Lead role.
CLAUDIO, a young lord from Florence. Male 18 – 25. Handsome and physically attractive young soldier who falls in love with Hero. Valiant and loving but also gullible. Lead role.
DON PEDRO, Prince of Aragon, and friend to Leonato. Male 30 – 45. Noble generous, courteous, intelligent, and loving. Quick to believe evil of others and hasty to take revenge. Most politically and socially powerful character. Physically fit. Lead role.
LEONATO, Governor of Messina, uncle to Beatrice, and Hero’s father. Male 30 -50. Wealthy and well respected. Lead role.
DOGBERRY, Male or female 30 – 50. Chief Policeman of Messina. Sincere, but uses the wrong words to convey meaning. Funny and bumbling but supremely confident. Featured role.
MARGARET, servant to Hero. Female 20 – 30. Unwittingly helps deceive Claudio. Lover of Borachio. Loves to break decorum with bawdy jokes and teasing. Featured role.
DON JOHN, Male 30 – 45. Don Pedro’s illegitimate half brother who is referred to as “the Bastard.” Handsome but melancholy, sullen, evil. He is the villain of the play motivated by envy of his brother. Featured role.
BORACHIO, Male 21 – 35. An evil conspirator with Don John and lover of Margaret. Supporting role.
CONRADE, Female 21 – 35. Don John’s lover, sexy, and participant in his evil schemes. Supporting role.
VERGES, GEORGE SEACOAL, FIRST WATCHMAN, SECOND WATCHMAN - male or female 25 – 35. Deputies to Dogberry. Bumbling police officers but extremely sincere. Supporting roles.
SEXTON, male or female 25 – 35. Honorable public official. Supporting role.
URSULA, servant to Hero. Female 20 – 30. Supporting role.
FRIAR FRANCIS, male or female, 30 – 50. Wise and understanding but very hip. Supporting role.
DON PEDRO’S AIDE/BODYGUARD, 25-35. Handsome, physically fit. Like a bodyguard. Always with the Prince.
LEONATO’S AIDE, 25-35. Handsome, physically fit. Like a bodyguard. Always with the Leonato.

Tuesday September 9 and Wednesday September 10
6:30pm – 9:00pm
This will be a very hip, contemporary version of the play set in 2025 with traditional text. Please have a 1 min to 2 min. monologue prepared. Prefer Shakespeare monologue but contemporary also acceptable.
No monologues from MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, please.
No accents required.
Bring a picture/resume (if you have one).
Auditions will be held in Stage West at Golden West College, 15751 Gothard Street at Center Avenue, Huntington Beach.
Enter the campus from the Gothard Street side near the Mainstage Theater. Stage West is opposite the Mainstage Theater.
Parking is free in the Gothard Street parking lot “J” near the Amphitheater and the Boys and Girls Club.
Rehearsals begin on Thursday October 2 and are scheduled for Monday through Thursday evenings from 7 pm until 10:00 pm. Cast members are called to rehearsals only when needed.
IF CAST IN THIS PRODUCTION, ALL ADULT ACTORS MUST ENROLL IN A 2-UNIT COLLEGE COURSE.
SOME GUEST ARTISTS NON-CREDIT (NO TUITION) COURSE EXEMPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE.
