- **Event Name**: Amalia Kussner, A Key Artist of the Gilded Age
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 22 Oct, 2026 at 06:30 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Are you interested in the Gilded Age? Come to the Flint Public Library to hear author Kathleen Langone give insight into that lavish world through the experiences of Amalia Kussner.

Amalia Kussner was a key artist who was sought after by the elite women of Gilded Age New York (Astors, Vanderbilts, etc). Having your miniature portrait done by Kussner was as important as wearing gowns from the House of Worth. Her talent, charm and beauty soon brought her talents to the British monarchy and the Romanov dynasty in the late 1890's. By 1900, her fame was evident in hundreds of newspapers across America and even in England. But soon, scandals would also be associated with this artist in America, with a mysterious marriage and then a scandalous lawsuit a year later. But in Europe, her popularity continued and she was compared to John Singer Sargent. This presentation will share many images of her artwork and the dramatic details of her life. Finally, some theories as to why she is not remembered in today's art world.

Copies of Langone's book, The Miniature Painter Revealed, a biography of Amalia Kussner that goes further into those fascinating Gilded Age details, will be available for sale at the event.
