The Macabre is a group exhibition presented at The Rising Phoenix Gallery, on view from September 4 through October 31, 2026. Timed with the turning of the season, this exhibition embraces the darker edges of imagination, inviting viewers to explore beauty, tension, and curiosity through works that lean into the eerie, the unsettling, and the hauntingly atmospheric.
Featuring artwork by Salem Slater, Sophia Rapata, Dennis Maloney, and Katherine Cundiff, The Macabre examines themes of mortality, mystery, folklore, psychological unease, and the poetic unknown. Across a range of styles and approaches, the artists transform traditionally dark subject matter into compelling visual narratives that are as thought-provoking as they are visually striking.
Rather than focusing solely on fear, The Macabre celebrates the allure of the shadowed and strange—those spaces where imagination deepens, emotions intensify, and storytelling thrives. The exhibition offers an engaging cultural experience for visitors drawn to alternative art, seasonal exhibitions, and thoughtful explorations of the human condition.
The public is warmly invited to attend the Opening & Artist Reception on Friday, September 4, from 5–7 PM, marking the debut of The Macabre at The Rising Phoenix Gallery.
This free, all-ages event provides guests the opportunity to experience the exhibition firsthand, meet participating artists, and enjoy an evening of art, conversation, and community. The reception serves as a welcoming kickoff to the gallery’s fall season and a perfect addition to a Michigan City visit during the autumn months.
