We Met at Monday Night Movies

Kick off Women’s History Month at this community film screening under the stars.

Haitian women’s voices and stories take center stage at this outdoor film screening at Lakou, a cultural hub and gathering space in Little Haiti.

Following the screening of two short films, attendees will split into small groups for facilitated conversations inspired by the works.

Featuring:

• “ESKWAD” by Keziah Jean, which captures the voices of local farmers’ organizations in Haiti, demonstrating how solidarity among agricultural workers is helping the country overcome underdevelopment and other challenges.
• “Querido Pequeño Haiti” by Diana Larrea, which the filmmaker describes as a love letter to Little Haiti, a neighborhood that has challenged, embraced and inspired her.
• Music by DJ Mack

Here’s what to expect:

7 p.m. Arrival. Check in. Choose your wristbands and make a name tag. Grab a drink and dinner and start mingling.

7:30 p.m. Opening. We’ll begin with introductions and an icebreaker.

7:45 p.m. Film screening. Settle in for short films “ESKWAD” and “Querido Pequeño Haiti.”

8:15 p.m. Small group conversations. We’ll break into small groups for facilitated conversations on the films.

9 p.m. Mix and mingle. Enjoy music by DJ Mack and refreshments from Lakou while mingling with new connections.

10 p.m. Event end. Meet someone cool? Fill out a Connection Card! If you match, we’ll reconnect you after the event.

This event is part of the Cine Amor film series. The name "Cine Amor" speaks to the idea of connection, love, and healing through art. By screening films that explore themes of identity, belonging, resistance, and resilience, this series invites audiences to experience cinema that speaks directly to their lived experiences.

This is a collaboration of several community organizations, including: Lakou Miami, Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance, FePouLi, iWitness, IPC ArtSpace, FIU’s Public Humanities Lab, and We Met in Miami.
