Despite the more advanced terminology which Aristotle and Plato had created, Aristotle recorded the doctrines of Thales in terms which were available to Thales in the sixth century B.C.E. Aristotle made a definite statement and presented it with confidence. ETHER In his book “On the Heavens,“ Aristotle introduced a new “first” element to the system of the “Classical Elements” or “Ionian Philosophy” (The Ionian school of Pre-Socratic philosophy was centered in Miletus, Ionia in the 6th century BC. Miletus and its environment were a thriving mercantile melting pot of current ideas of the time. The Ionian School included such thinkers as Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Heraclitus, and Anaxagoras). He noted that the four terrestrial classical elements were subject to change and naturally moved linearly. The first element however, located in the celestial regions and heavenly bodies, moved circularly, and had none of the qualities the terrestrial classical elements had. It was neither hot nor cold, neither wet nor dry. With this addition the system of was extended to five. His philosophy saw ETHER as the fifth element, after earth, air, fire, and water. He believed the four terrestrial elements were changeable and transient, but the planets and stars were eternal and thus must be made of a different substance that transcended the earthy four. He called ETHER.
