- **Event Description**: Despite the crumbling infrastructure, life pulses with resilience as generations navigate a landscape filled with memories of a bygone era.About this EventChildren of the Revolution | Hijos de la Revolución: Miami Art Week @IPC ArtSpaceIn Havana, Cuba, the Revolution rages on. Despite the depletion of goods and the crumbling of buildings during El Periodo Especial or The Special Period and the sustained stubbornness of the Embargo, everyday life moves apace. The boulevards and the train stations are peopled with members of multiple generations determined to live their best lives, even if in a space peppered with memory and longing for a past that only appears in family lore and state-sanctioned propaganda. Ghosts from bygone eras live amongst the lines for rationed food and the children in their school uniforms. The children of the revolution depicted in these color and black-and-white images by Marice Cohn Band and curated by Carl-Philippe Juste -- Children of the Revolution/ Hijos de la Revolución -- lived in the interstices between the memory of having had and the reality of longing for.In these frames, time freezes. The viewer is invited into the daily lives of children in Havana, Cuba from the end of the days of Soviet influence in the 1980s through 2019. We find school children, who no doubt learned their communist lessons for the day, standing in line with a portrait of the father of revolution himself, Che Guevara. These are children whose parents were indoctrinated – and were indoctrinated themselves – and ofttimes disillusioned by the Revolution of Broken Promises. Yet, humanity triumphs despite the shadow that the revolution casts as apartment buildings crumble; no matter the political landscape, we gaze at children living their lives – whether at two girls sharing a secret and a laugh or a group of boys speeding down streets on seated boards, rounding the plaza. The images, made by prize-winning photographer, Marice Cohn Band, represent her work over decades of documenting this island nation, from the 1980s up until 2019. As a member of the Miami Herald news team for over 25 years, Cohn Band, has captured many iconic moments of the tumultuous Cuban narrative along with everyday images of children going to school, family life, and the everyday challenges of daily life, Children of the Revolution | Hijos de la Revolución: Miami Art Week @IPC ArtSpace re-examines the complexities of the failed promises of the Revolution. In Havana, Cuba, the Revolution rages on. As a member of the Miami Herald news team for over 25 years, Cohn Band, has captured many iconic moments of the tumultuous Cuban narrative along with everyday images of children going to school, family weddings, and daily playing in the streets. In each instance, Cohn Band finds the beauty in the ordinary and the hope amidst despair. In the end, within daily life in Cuba, like in so many nations ravaged by international political interests, there is always space for humanity.
