All This Has Come Upon Us...

Presentation by Mark Podwal

Monday, March 4, 2019 | 2 PM | FIU MMC | Green School Gallery (SIPA 110)

Join the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs for a presentation by artist Mark Podwal about his series “All This Has Come Upon Us…,” currently on view in the Green School Gallery. This body of work is a limited series of 42 individually framed and richly colorful archival pigment prints, illustrating historical tragedies and injustices suffered by the Jewish people since the days of Pharaoh. Each work, conceived as a page of a book, illuminates the saying that “misfortune seldom misses a Jew,” and is paired with a psalm chosen by Podwal from the Book of Psalms. As Podwal’s powerful works attest, his message is that Jews have sustained their extraordinary faith, persevered and survived. The original exhibition premiered in April 2014 at the Terezin Ghetto Museum outside of Prague. According to Podwal, “the paintings and drawings in this series are a disturbing reminder of how Europe’s extensive history of ‘Jew-hatred’ laid the groundwork for Terezin and Auschwitz.” This exhibit is especially timely in the face of current acts of anti-Semitism throughout the world.

Mark Podwal is an award-winning artist, author and physician. His art has been featured on The New York Times op-ed page and is represented in collections across numerous venues, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Israel Museum and Prague's National Gallery. His current projects include a poster for each new Metropolitan Opera season; a series, Kaddish for Dąbrowa Białostocka, about the Polish village where his mother was born; and illustrations for Heinrich Heine's poems, Hebrew Melodies.
