Technically, Larkin says, Metairie has never officially "become" a city. It is a large, highly populated unincorporated area within Jefferson Parish rather than an incorporated municipality. It is governed directly by the Jefferson Parish Council.

The timeline of how it evolved and its lone attempt at incorporation includes a few key moments:

1720s: French settlers established small tenant farms on the natural high ground known as the Metairie Ridge. The French word métairie translates to "farm".

Late 1910s – 1920s: The installation of electric streetcars along Metairie Road and advanced drainage pumps transformed the former agricultural land into the residential area now known as "Old Metairie."

1927 (Brief Incorporation): On June 19, 1927, residents incorporated as the "Village of Metairie Ridge" to secure essential gas and utility services.

1928 (Return to Unincorporated Status): Less than 18 months later, the incorporation was successfully overturned in court due to disputes involving local gambling, roadhouses, and parish politics.

Post-World War II Boom: The draining of the cypress swamps between the ridge and Lake Pontchartrain allowed Metairie to expand rapidly into the sprawling suburban community it is today.

Larkin grew up in Metairie. His main history interests focus on
the New Orleans area during the Civil War, one of the most tumultuous periods in the region’s history.
