Both Mozart and Brahms loved the viola.
Mozart was the pioneer in composing beautiful parts for this instrument that was considered as the underdog. He loved its 'warm tone' and played viola himself. After much admiration for Haydn's sting quartets, he was inspired to write some viola quintets, a combination that had never been done before.
His quintet in C major K515 was written right after the immense succes of The Mariage of Figaro premiere in 1787. You can feel the joy through the movements. The second movement is a beautiful conversation between the first violin and first viola which is thought to be a rememberance of his Sinfonia Concertante for solo violin and viola accompanied by orchestra.
In a rare episode of pride, Brahms, who was a highly self-critical man, wrote to his publisher: 'You have never before had such a beautiful work from me'.
It is a masterpiece full of joy, Hungarian-themed influences and large amounts of energy. At the start of the piece, the cello shines through the thick texture of the two violins and two violas, with a passionate and electrifying melody.
iBruckner's viola quintet is a masterwork of Romantic chamber music. Commissioned by Josef Hellmesberger, it bridges the gap between symphonic grandeur and intimate, contrapuntal string textures.
Come hear these incredible pieces live!
