Ma’moul is an ancient filled shortbread pastry deeply rooted in the Middle East, with a history spanning thousands of years. Food historians trace Ma’moul back to ancient Egypt, where similar date stuffed decorated bread was made as early as 3,000 BCE to 4,000 bce often as offerings to the gods.
Traditionally, making Ma’moul is a communal activity where women from families and neighbours gather to prepare, fill and bake hundreds of the delicious treats. As a traditional Labour intensive and communal craft, crafting Ma’moul is considered a labour of love passed down through generations.
