Tips and Tools for Starting to Bird

Discover the joy of birding and learn how to identify birds with confidence. This presentation introduces the key clues birders use—season, habitat, size, behavior, and color—and offers practical tips on when and where to find birds. We’ll also explore helpful questions to ask in the field, along with beginner-friendly books and apps that make identification easier. You’ll deepen your understanding of familiar birds and be introduced to some new ones along the way.

Donna Miller has been birding for 10 years in the Milwaukee area. She co-leads the Milwaukee Birders birding group and has led walks at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, Havenwoods State Forest, and Lakeshore State Park. She loves introducing people to birding.
