Holocaust survivor Manny Gabler, whose early childhood was shaped by flight from Europe and refuge in wartime Shanghai, will share personal reflections on survival, dislocation, and resilience, offering insight into the human experiences behind conflict and forced migration. Born in Italy and raised in the Hongkou district - one of the few places in the world open to Jewish refugees - his story illuminates a lesser-known chapter of Holocaust history and global displacement.

Manfred Sigmund “Manny” Gabler was born in Italy in 1938 and spent his early childhood as a Jewish refugee in Shanghai’s Hongkou district during the Second World War. His family fled Nazi persecution by joining the thousands of Jewish refugees who found safety in Shanghai. Growing up in the wartime ghetto, he witnessed firsthand the hardship, scarcity, and resilience that defined daily life for the displaced Jewish community. After the war, his family resettled and rebuilt their lives, carrying with them the profound experiences of survival and adaptation across continents. Today, Mr. Gabler speaks publicly about his story to help preserve living memory of Holocaust history.

Organized and Sponsored by the Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies, the Holocaust and Genocide Studies minor, the Museum Studies program, and the Encountering Judaism Initiative (Theology Department) in the College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.
