Throughout U.S. history, the democratic principles articulated in the nation’s founding documents have rarely been extended to all residents. Historians have traditionally framed American history as a struggle to universalize those ideals, often overlooking how marginalized communities have actually practiced democracy within the constraints imposed on them. This lecture examines how American Muslims have navigated and embodied democratic values through their religious understandings despite systemic exclusions. By foregrounding American Muslim values and democratic practices, this talk aims to exemplify how national narratives can be reshaped to reflect the lived realities that constitute the broader American experience.

Kambiz GhaneaBassiri, Ph.D. is Professor of Religion at Carleton College and a leading scholar of Islamic Studies, American religious history, and Middle East Studies. A Carnegie Scholar and recipient of Guggenheim and Luce-AAR fellowships, he is widely recognized for his groundbreaking work on the history of Islam in America and his forthcoming study of the mosque in Islamic history. His teaching spans the 7th–10th and 19th–21st centuries across the Arabic- and Persian-speaking world as well as North America, and his scholarship engages theological texts, material culture, and lived religious practices with both critical rigor and empathetic insight. He joined Carleton’s faculty in 2023.

Organized and sponsored by the Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies in collaboration with the Encountering Islam Initiative in the Department of Theology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas, and in partnership with the Inspiring Generosity Showcase in Minnesota (running March 24-May 23, 2206).
