Join us for a conversation with author Jack El-Hai about The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, his gripping account of U.S. Army psychiatrist Douglas M. Kelley’s encounters with Nazi leaders awaiting trial at Nuremberg, which was recently adapted into the major motion picture Nuremberg. Drawing on newly uncovered medical records and personal papers, the book probes the unsettling relationship between Kelley and Hermann Göring and asks enduring questions about evil, responsibility, and the limits of psychological explanation in the aftermath of mass atrocity.

Jack El-Hai is an award-winning author and journalist whose work explores the intersections of history, medicine, psychology, and moral responsibility. His books include The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, a widely translated and internationally acclaimed study of the encounter between Nazi leaders and American military psychiatrists at the end of World War II, as well as The Lobotomist and other works of narrative nonfiction. El-Hai’s writing has appeared in Scientific American, The Atlantic, Smithsonian, Wired, and The Washington Post Magazine, among many others. A recipient of multiple journalism and book awards, he lives in Minneapolis.

Hosted by the Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies and the Holocaust and Genocide Studies minor in the College of Arts and Sciences in collaboration with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, and the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest.
