Schiff Nature Preserve is proud to host one of the few Maple Sugaring events in northern New Jersey. Schiff’s Conservation & Stewardship Committee members and our volunteers work to present a fun and educational OUTDOOR program in early
March each year.
Having tapped approximately 30 Maple trees in late winter and collected gallons of sap for weeks, the committee welcomes the general public, families, Scout groups, and folks of all ages, to spend a few hours at Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham to experience a hands-on demonstration of maple sugar production, an informational presentation, an interactive display of educational materials and Schiff’s Maple themed Bake Sale, followed by a hike to the Maple Grove.
The tradition of maple sugaring began centuries ago with the traditions and practices of Native American and early settlers and continues today as small farms and private landowners continue the rewarding practice of maple sugaring. Schiff is fortunate to have sugar maples (Acer saccharum) throughout the preserve that can be sustainably tapped for maple syrup production.
Join us at the Nature Center Native Garden for the educational presentation to learn about the history of maple sugaring, the seasonal life cycle of the sugar maple tree, and how 100% real maple syrup is made. The educational program starts with learning to identify a maple tree, moves to visiting an installed maple tree tap actively drawing sap from a maple tree, and finally to see the wood-fired evaporator in action turning the sap into the final sweet product. Guests thoroughly enjoy tasting fresh syrup made from our own Schiff maple trees. With taste buds activated, Schiff fundraises by offering an array of maple infused baked goods, so bring some cash to buy some treats in support of Schiff!
An optional two-mile field walk to the working maple grove will be offered to see the taps and collection operation. Please arrive at the Nature Center 15 minutes before the start time and dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Boots are recommended as the trails can be wet, muddy, and/or covered by snow.
This program is FREE for Schiff members. Non-member fee is $10 per person. Please no dogs or strollers. Youngest children may attend in backpacks. Seating is limited for the educational program. This program will be held rain or shine, except for extreme wind, cold, or icy conditions. Advance registration ensures that you receive weather cancellation notices. Visit our calendar of events to preregister to attend. We look forward to having you visit.
