Poetry Writing for Beginners Workshop

Sunday 29th April, 2018 | 10am – 2pm

Use the new season as the inspiration to try something different. Come and join us for our Poetry Writing workshop in Nottinghamshire hosted by Fiona Theokritoff. Fiona takes a straightforward approach to writing her poems, many of which are motivated by the great outdoors.

The theme for this four-hour spring workshop is ‘Stepping into the Green’. You will take a stroll through the vineyard estate, seeking inspiration in nature. Fiona will guide you through a simple process of observation and writing, specially created for beginners. Fiona says, “I believe everyone can write. With a little guidance, and away from everyday life, people are amazed at what they produce. I love helping people find their voice and creativity, and Hanwell Wine Estate provides the perfect setting to inspire budding poets.”
Fiona will help you to find out what you want to say, before working alongside you to help you create your own nature poetry. The workshop includes a light lunch with a glass of local wine and you will leave at the end of the day with several different poems.

Outline of the day
10am – Welcome & introduction –
What is a poem?
Does it have to rhyme?
What are the rules?
Breaking the rules. Can anyone write?
Inspiration to be taken from a ‘stepping into the green’ themed wander around the vineyard estate, observing and gathering as you go. Collect leaves, twigs, stones, make notes, sketch, take photos and listen to the birds, before heading back to the lodge to put pen to paper.
12am – A light lunch with a glass of local wine and an introduction to Hanwell Wine Estate. After lunch, Fiona will continue to guide you to create different pieces of poetry.
2pm – Depart with your own words inspired by a day at Hanwell Wine Estate in the springtime.

The Music of the Vineyard Poem by Helen Hagon
(an attendee from our 2017 workshop)
We follow the winding overture-path,
across the stave of blue above and green below.
A prelude to the music of the vineyard.
Contrapuntal birdsong,
rumbling traffic weaving in polyphony,
and the drone of a distant plane in the bass.
Nature and unnature attempting harmony.
Thistles and nettles play prickly staccato,
contrasting with leafy and grassy legato.
Celestial lighting in this airy concert hall
Brightened and dimmed by dancing clouds.
Buds waiting to clash blossoming cymbals
at the season’s climax
when the minor key of winter
modulates to spring major.
