Would you like to assist with our bird dietary research and learn some new skills?
The Tweed Foundation is inviting volunteers to take part in our bird dietary research programme — a hands-on opportunity to contribute directly to fisheries science on the River Tweed.
What is the research?
Understanding predator–prey relationships is a critical component of river management. As part of our ongoing monitoring work, we analyse the stomach contents of cormorants and goosanders to determine fish species composition and size.
Volunteers will assist in identifying and measuring fish bones recovered from stomach samples. This data helps us:
- Quantify predation levels
- Assess impacts on salmonid populations
- Inform evidence-based management decisions
- Contribute to long-term ecological monitoring
This is practical, methodical work that underpins real conservation outcomes.
