A master craftsman, Bernstein’s pieces appear easy and familiar to listeners, but below the surface provide complex musical structures that are demanding and challenging for performers. His style brought new energy and life to American music blending genres that crossed the popular with the classical and the light-hearted with the serious.
Bernstein gave us a greater appreciation of music, but perhaps his greatest gift was his music’s ability to evoke peace and an understanding of our shared humanity. His music accented our kindness, resilience, empathy, compassion, and love that knew no barriers or boundaries.
