Gian Slater, Simon Barker and Christopher Hale have performed and recorded several projects together over the past decade – from Hale’s Sylvan Coda to Gian’s Grey is Ground. For this special trio gig, they will perform some of their shared repertoire alongside open improvisations.
Gian Slater is a vocalist and composer based in Melbourne who has released 10 albums of original music and featured on many acclaimed national and international projects and recordings. Her approach incorporates wordless singing and improvisation, songwriting; electronics and extended vocal techniques; new music and contemporary composition and collaborations with theatre and dance practitioners.
Christopher Hale has been called “one of the most unique and respected musicians in Australia” (Glam Adelaide), an “unconventional virtuoso of the bass guitar” (The Age), “Australian jazz heavyweight and a brilliant, groundbreaking composer” (Rhythms Magazine). Growing up playing Brazilian, Afro-Cuban music and flamenco, Hale has always involved himself deeply in musical traditions, drawing on deep understandings of these styles to influence a personal approach for jazz and improvisation.
