An evening with Judges Amul Thapar and Andrew Oldham
Friday 4 September 2026
Australian Catholic University, Melbourne

What forms a wise person?

Join us for a rare evening with two of America's most distinguished judges - Amul Thapar of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and Judge Andrew Oldham of the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit - as they explore this timeless question in a moderated conversation.

Drawing on their experience on the federal bench and their own educational journeys, Judges Thapar and Oldham will reflect on the making of wisdom: the role of religion, history, literature and the liberal arts; the lessons of suffering and service; and why the formation of character matters as much as the acquisition of knowledge - in the law, in education, and in life.

About the Speakers

Judge Amul Thapar serves on the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. A convert to Catholicism, he is widely regarded as one of America's leading appellate judges and a compelling advocate for faith, freedom and the Western legal tradition.

Judge Andrew Oldham serves on the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. A former law clerk at the US Supreme Court, he is recognised for his scholarship on constitutional law and the Anglo-American legal inheritance.

This event is hosted by the Chesterton Academy of Melbourne, which will open in 2028 as Victoria's first classical, Prep-12 school - a school dedicated to forming young people in wisdom and virtue through the liberal arts and the Catholic intellectual tradition. The evening is made possible through the support of the MaiTri Foundation.
