- **Event Description**: Nash Lee Quartet feat. Toby Barrett

Guitarist Nash Lee (12 Tone Diamonds, Rabid Hawk) leads a new quartet featuring rising NZ saxophonist Toby Barrett, and established local legends acclaimed bassist Chris Hale, and in demand drummer Dave Beck. Together they explore subtle rhythmic interplay and melodic dialogue — a sound that honours the jazz tradition while embracing open improvisation and forward motion.

Toby Barrett brings his award-winning voice from the New Zealand jazz scene — having performed with Melissa Aldana, Danilo Pérez, and more — and is now making waves in Melbourne.

Lee began his musical journey in the mid/ late ’90s on the NSW North Coast, mentored by rhythm visionary Greg Sheehan and guitarist Jim Kelly. During that period, he drew deep inspiration from the vibrant local scene — including musicians such as the late Dave Addes, Thierry Fosmale, Scott Tinkler, and Elliot Dalgliesh — as well as from the electric-era recordings of Miles Davis

Having spent most of his career in original improvised music, Lee has more recently turned his focus toward the jazz standard repertoire — refining his voice within the tradition while maintaining an adventurous, exploratory edge.
“Lee’s playing gripped me… tightening his lyrical sound until he seemed to meet resistance in the air.”
— John Clare, SIMA
