Five Pathways to Love
Bringing to Australia a transcendent celebration of Sufi music from Pakistan, the Arab world, Andalusia, Iran, and Turkey.
Performed by the mystical lineage of legendary Sufi musician and poet Hazrat Amir Khusro, Five Pathways to Love is an unprecedented and unmissable concert will bring you the hauntingly beautiful vocals and rhymes of Fareed Ustaad Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad Qawwals (one of Pakistan's leading sufi singing collectives) and the masterful talents of Tarab Ensemble (Australia's leading classical Arabic music group) around the themes inspired by Sufi masters- carrying audiences toward collective elevation and spiritual crescendo.
To fly even to higher skies, the two groups will be joined by the renowned Victorian Trade Union Choir, the charming voice of Maryam Parsi, the captivating performance of Mana Duet, Setareh Nematollahi (tar) and Elham (sufi dance).
In this unique performance, 40 artists will weave together soul-stirring melodies from Pakistan, the Arab world, Andalusia, Iran and Australia with the fluid beauty of sacred dance, poetry readings (by Yousef Alreemawi in Arabic, Fereshteh Mamashkhani in Farsi, Farah Beaini in English) and live calligraphy by Homayoun Ajdari (Australia's leading calligrapher of Farsi/ Arabic) creating a space that showcases several layers of the Sufi traditions around a set of alphabets shared by many languages including Urdu, Farsi, Ottoman and Arabic.
Qawwali is presented as a living inheritance, designed not only to be heard but experienced. Music, poetry, and image dissolve the boundary between performer and listener, carrying audiences towards shared elevation and ascension.
Tarab is an Arabic term describing a deep pleasure state through music, and the group – with members from Palestine, Syria, Australia, Armenia, Japan, Iran and Egypt – lived up to its name. Blending Arabic instruments such as the oud (lute) and nay with western ones such as saxophone, flute and double bass, the result was a hypnotic, blissful transportation.
