You will remember that, following his illness in 2023, we attempted in October to arrange a trip to one of Pierre Hourlier's entertaining tastings for the SCR, but probably did not give enough notice, so it could not go ahead at that time. Although he no longer travels to present tastings, the firm is happy to host us from 2.30 pm on Monday 29th June at their premises at Unit 11, Melbourne Hall Visitor Centre, Church Square, Melbourne, DE73 8EN. They will also provide a light buffet of French cheeses, pates, etc, imported direct, at a cost of £15 during the tasting. (The tasting itself, of about 8 wines, is as usual free. We are assured that the selection of food will allow plenty of choice for vegetarians.) We realize that for some participants this will require booking a half day's leave, but hope that with this amount of notice many of you will feel able to do this. Pierre also advises that allowing enough time will give us a chance to enjoy the location, beside a lake, as well as the tasting. We shall leave for Keele about 5 pm. We will also, depending on numbers attending, book a coach or minibus, leaving Keele about 1.00 pm. The price of this will depend on how many wish to go, so at present I cannot give a definite price, although it is likely to be between £15 and £20. Please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to attend, and certainly by no later than Friday 29th May, so we can make a firm booking and advise prices. Apart from as usual being able to order from Pierre through the SCR, as we will be on group transport it will also be possible to purchase on the day and bring back your bottles with you. I look forward to hearing from you: scr.treasurer@keele.ac.uk In more detail the drill for the day will be Leave Keele 1.00 pm 2.10/15 Arrive at Melbourne drop off by Church and go to Hourlier's for 12.30 start We taste 8 wines, probably 4 white and 4 red, with a light buffet (not a full lunch) served while we taste at £15 per head, consisting of a selection of cheeses, bread and other French products which they import themselves such as various pates etc. No need they say for vegetarian numbers as they find vegetarians just take what suits them as there is enough variety about on the tables. This will take about one hour 30 minutes, or maybe a little more depending on our numbers, with Pierre suggesting that after 4 pm we visit Melbourne for about an hour. He can recommend the lake in particular, which is below their premises. That time will give them time for orders to be prepared and everybody can pay and collect them before leaving,, which should be about 5.00. Then we should be at Keele for about 6.15 at the latest. The price of transport will depend entirely on the size of the vehicle and the number travelling, but I will advise that asap to those who book.
