Nora invites you to join her in celebrating the bicentennial of the Erie Canal with a bus trip and cruise on part of the canal in the Mohawk Valley on Friday, Sept. 26.
A Scenic Excursions motorcoach will pick up travelers at -- and return them to -- stops in West Seneca and Williamsville.
Your first stop will be at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse for a brief, self-guided visit.
The museum preserves and showcases the
1850 National Register Weighlock Building.
The exhibits detail the history and construction of the Erie Canal, from itsearliest conception to the modern Barge Canal System.
They feature many remarkable images and artifacts from the museum’s collection. There also is an interactive explanation how canal locks work and a replica of a canal-side general store.
Next you will travel to Little Falls for a delicious buffet lunch at Beardslee Castle. Built in 1860 as a replica of an Irish Castle, it's both modern and ancient.
After lunch, you will travel to Herkimer for a narrated sightseeing cruise on the calm waters of the Erie Canal hosted by Erie Canal Cruises.
You will learn about the history of this area of Central New York and canal locks.
As part of the cruise, you will travel through Lock 18, which raises and lowers vessels more than 20 feet
Following the cruise, there will be a food/comfort stop on the way home.
