Emerging Industries & The Future of Work Part 3/3
This is the final session of a three-part series event.
Session 3: Renewable Energy is designed to raise awareness and encourage business and community members to consider the impacts of new industries in our region and how this will affect the region's workforce; and to help prepare employers and workers for the jobs of tomorrow.
The day will be structured into 4 sessions. Experience an exceptional day of learning with thought-provoking speakers and leaders.
SESSION 1 - KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Gianni Kovacevic is an investor, author and sought-after strategist in the energy divestment movement. Drawing from over 20,000 hours of research in incumbent and modern energy themes, he is frequently interviewed by the media and has enlightened audiences around the world with his unique brand of storytelling.
His recently published book, My Electrician Drives a Porsche?, was introduced to audiences by way of a one-of-a-kind journey across America in an all-electric Tesla, now credited as the world’s first zero emission book tour. Widely considered as a must read in investment circles, the book is written as an allegory that showcases how technology and human progress will impact every facet of our lives.
Through artful storytelling and finely illustrated analysis, Gianni Kovacevic engages audiences about the fusion between technology and energy. He shares how this will impact your life, your business and your future. Will you have more or less customers in the future and what is the impact of established economies versus emerging economies? Audiences learn about the global shifts in energy production that are changing our world, our work place and the role technology plays and how environmental concerns will naturally figure into the economy of the future.
SESSION 2 - SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT
Alberta is a national leader in wind energy, with an installed wind energy capacity of 1,479 MW. The province’s wind farms produce enough electricity each year to power 625,000 homes, equivalent to about eight per cent of Alberta’s electricity demand. As impressive as its progress has been so far, the future for wind energy in Alberta is even brighter.
The provincial government’s Climate Leadership Plan promises to phase out Alberta’s 6,300 MW of coal-fired electricity generation by 2030, and replace two-thirds of it with renewable energy. The percentage of demand met by renewable sources is expected to triple from nine per cent today to as much as 30 per cent by 2030.
Evan Wilson from the Canadian Wind Energy Association will be on hand to discuss this transition and the opportunities that will be derived from all this planned development in the province of Alberta
SESSION 3 - LOCAL DEVELOPER
You don’t have to drive far in southern Alberta to see an old rusted windmill in the back corner of someone’s yard. Interesting how a great idea lived its course, gave way to the modern grid and now is being reinvented in the form of wind energy.
Barclay Tanner, Senior Operations Manager at VESTAS will talk and give a picture of what work within wind energy looks like, how it impacts the community around it and what the future could look like for southern Alberta.
SESSION 4: Panel Discussion
We will host a panel discussion with all of the days’ speakers with a Q&A session on the days’ presentation and the topics discussed.
