On New Year’s Day, many parks, forests, and refuges host free hikes for all ages.For  the third year, the Carolina Sandhills NWR will host a First Day Hike led by our wanderer, Kay McCutcheon. Kay has walked, hiked, or meandered more than 2,000 miles of refuge trails, roads, and firebreaks. Each month, Kay selects a three to five-mile hike that highlights plants, birds, or habitats that are “in season.”To start your year off in the outdoors, meet her at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at the lakeside shelter at Lake Bee Recreation Area (off of SC Highway 145).
