To examine Carboniferous lithofacies (limestones, shales, sandstones) and associated mineralisation at the south-eastern margin of the Derbyshire White Peak. This will include consideration of their significance as natural resources, aspects of industrial archaeology (quarrying, mineral workings, transport legacy) and geoconservation.

Morning session:- an examination of limestone quarries at the NSC and the sedimentary and fossil evidence used to reconstruct early Carboniferous palaeoenvironments; we’ll also see mineralised joints. A notable on-site feature is the extensive Millennium Wall with different sections constructed of stone from various parts of Britain and in the appropriate regional style. For lunch there is the option of the NSC Discovery Centre which houses a café, shop and other facilities.

Afternoon session:- a walk (~1 km) along the High Peak Trail (a former railway) to Black Rocks. We will stop en-route to see dermal denticles of Carboniferous fish (Steeplehouse quarry). We’ll also see significant landscape features including the impact of geological structure and the remains of Cromford Moor Mine with its large spoil heap containing local minerals. The session will conclude with a short ascent to a popular panoramic viewpoint at Black Rocks from where we can view the Derwent Gorge at Matlock and consider aspects of Quaternary landscape evolution. Return walk to the NSC car park.
