About the event

Shamanic Drum Making Ceremony
Come gather in community and experience the magic of creating your own medicine drum. Workshop will include all materials, guided hands-on instruction and support, and a traditional tobacco ceremony to bless each drum. Each participant will be making their own single-head, shamanic style drum and matching driftwood beater.

The cost of the workshop includes everything needed to make a 12”, 14”, 16” or 18” single head rawhide drum and matching beater. This includes a maple hoop, a rawhide round for the drum head, rawhide lacing, and locally sourced driftwood sticks collected 'in a good way' for the beater.

SIZE OPTIONS:
What size drum would you like to make?

The following sizes are available: 12”, 14”, 16”, or 18”.

Smaller drums travel well, are perfect for song circles and sweat lodge and will be higher in pitch with more “thud” and less resonance.
Larger drums are perfect for shamanic journeying, ceremony, drum circles, sound healing, and meditation and will have more overall volume, bass response, and resonance.
If you want one drum to cover all the bases, I recommend a 14” or 16” drum.

RAWHIDE OPTIONS:
Available hide options are elk, cow, horse or buffalo. Elk and buffalo are considered traditional hides and embody excellent properties for these style drums. Each hide has its own unique characteristics and “medicine.”

Horse is typically the thinnest and most resonant and can come with very interesting markings and figuring on the hide. (Please message me regarding availability if you’re interested in horse.) Horse tends to be darker, ranging from lighter to very dark brown.
Elk is usually slightly thicker than horse and offers a nice balance of bass response and resonance. I personally like elk hides very much. Elk is lighter and is a good choice if you intend to paint your drum.
Buffalo is thicker and darker will have a slightly deeper, richer tone with less high end resonance.
Cow is not a “traditional” hide since it is a domesticated animal; however, cow hides are often used on traditional style powwow drums for their toughness and powerful, deep tone. I personally have a 12” cow drum that I call my “holy cow” drum; I love it and use it often in ceremony. Cow is also a good choice if you intend to paint your drum.

INVESTMENT:

12” drum — $175 (elk, horse, cow), $185 (buffalo)
14” & 16” drum — $225 (elk, horse, cow) $235 (buffalo)
18” drum — $275 (elk, horse, cow), $285 (buffalo)
