- **Event Description**: “A Woman’s Place Is In the World” tells the story of Shirley Sump through the many ways she created.

Shirley painted, sewed and wrote, drawing inspiration from the places she lived, the cultures she encountered and a lifelong curiosity about the world around her. Her paintings include barns, German villages, ships, animals, still lifes and other subjects, while her sewing ranged from quilts and aprons to toys and clothing.

She was also a freelance writer, selling articles about embroidered samplers and recipes to publishing companies. Several of those articles and manuscripts are included in the exhibition.

Much of the artwork dates from the 1970s and 1980s, but the exhibit reaches well beyond one period or one medium. Together, Shirley’s paintings, sewing and writing show a woman who loved to learn, explore ideas and create in whatever form interested her.

Her son Nolan may have summed her up best: “My mom never saw herself as someone who had to stay in one lane.”
