Knitting 202: How to Read Your Stitches

"Was that last stitch a knit or a purl? Did I already work that increase? What row am I on?"

If you've ever found yourself asking these questions, this class is for you.

Learning to read your knitting is one of the most valuable skills a knitter can develop. Instead of guessing where you are in a pattern, you'll learn how to use the fabric itself to find your place.

In this class, you'll learn how to identify knit stitches, purl stitches, yarn overs, decreases, increases, and twisted stitches. We'll explore the structure and orientation of stitches and practice counting rows and stitches, whether they're on your needles or already worked into the fabric.

By the end of class, you'll be better equipped to understand what your knitting is telling you, making it easier to follow patterns, catch mistakes, and knit with confidence.

Part of Jenna's Knitting 200 series, helping knitters move from following instructions to understanding what they're doing and why.

Pre-requisites:

Casting On
Knit stitch
Purl Stitch
This is NOT an absolute beginner class. Please be aware that class time will not be spent on reteaching the aforementioned prerequisites.

Supplies Needed:

Yarn: 10-20 grams of light colored, worsted weight yarn
Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) or US 5 (5mm) knitting needles (can be straight or circular in any length)
Swatch begun outside of class using the yarn and needles listed in supplies needed.
Supplies purchased at Yarncom for this class will receive a 10% discount. *some exclusions apply

Homework:

Gather your supplies
Start a swatch as follows:
Cast on 40 stitches using your preferred cast on method
Row 1: Slip the first stitch, knit to the end of the row.
Repeat row 1, five times (for a total of 6 rows)
Leave these stitches on the needles and bring to class.
