Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Class

o $20 fee per student covers supplies for class and a meal at the final class/exercise
Registration and payment deadline is noon on January 15, 2025.
Please note class size is limited to 30.
QUICK paced full-weekend class February 21 and February 22, 2025.
Both classes in this series are to be held at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office EMA office location (2369 Jessup Avenue 3rd Floor, Marshalltown).
After taking the class, you can apply to join the Marshall County CERT team! (This isn’t required but encouraged.)
Class dates and times are (must attend both):
Saturday, February 21, 2026
8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (bring lunch)
Sunday, February 22, 2026
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (lunch provided)
What is CERT?
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program
o helps to train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations
o “Neighbor helping neighbor”
Those that join the Marshall County CERT (eligible after taking this class)
o help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community such as crowd and traffic control and public education
o CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site.
Who can become a CERT member?
The CERT program has a place for citizens of various ages and abilities.
In Marshall County there a few qualifications to become a member of the team:
• Individuals must be at least 17 years of age (must be 18 to become a member of the Marshall County team),
• Individuals must submit to and pass a background check,
• Individuals must attend all basic training classes (2 total).
The need to be ready
In 95% of all emergencies bystanders or victims themselves are the first to provide emergency assistance or to perform a rescue. Will you know what to do?
