More than five decades of Pocahontas County bluegrass come home for one of the Opera House’s favorite December traditions.

Few bands are as closely tied to the musical history of Pocahontas County as the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys.

Formed in 1968 and still led by banjo player and vocalist Richard Hefner, the band has carried traditional West Virginia bluegrass through more than five decades of festivals, radio programs, dances and concerts.

Hard-driving banjo, fiddle and mandolin, steady guitar and bass, and classic bluegrass harmony remain at the heart of the band’s sound. Through changing lineups and generations of musicians, the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys have stayed firmly connected to the community where they began.

Hefner’s music and stories are also featured in the Opera House’s Story Sessions, which documents the musicians who have carried and continue to carry the traditional music of these mountains.

Their annual December appearance feels as much like a homecoming as a concert and has become an Opera House tradition all its own.

Tickets are available online, at the door or at the 4th Ave Gallery (Pocahontas County Artisans Co-op).

The Pocahontas County Opera House Performance Series is presented with support from Pocahontas County Dramas, Fairs and Festivals and the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau. This project is supported with financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
