We’re hosting two NSP Skills Assessment sessions for those looking to begin the path toward becoming a patroller. These assessments help determine your readiness for toboggan training and the full NSP training pipeline.

Assessment Dates:

• Saturday, December 27 — 8:30 AM, Main Cafeteria

• Saturday, January 3 — 8:30 AM, Main Cafeteria

What to Expect

The skills assessment evaluates your on-mountain competence and confirms that you’re prepared to begin toboggan training. Skiers and riders are welcome. Participants should be confident navigating the entire mountain—including Grizzly—and comfortable in a variety of terrain types. Deep snow and moguls are not a concern.

What Comes Next

Candidates who pass the assessment will move into toboggan training, a commitment of 1–2 seasons (January–January) over 5–6 weekends, typically aligned with Bear Valley team weekends. Completion earns an OET (Outdoor Emergency Transportation) certificate.

After OET, candidates complete OEC (Outdoor Emergency Care) training—usually offered in summer or fall through NSP.

During your second season, you’ll participate in on-hill medical scenarios across 5+ weekends. Successful completion leads to full ski patrol certification and the red coat.

Why Join Ski Patrol?
The National Ski Patrol community brings together people who love skiing and riding and want to contribute to mountain safety. Patrollers receive a range of benefits, including NSP Pro Deals. After 15 volunteer days, you’ll earn a free season pass; after 25 days, locker payments may be reimbursed. Each year on patrol also provides an additional dependent pass.
