CROIXEnjoy cookies, coffee, and conversation with author Martin Case -- hosted by local Dakota business owner and poet Rosetta Peters, Dakota novelist Diane Wilson, and UMN PhD student An Garagiola, Bois Forte Anishinaabe – the local team studying Native American history in the St. Croix Valley through a Legacy Grant from the Minnesota Historical Society.In his book, The Relentless Business of Treaties, Case investigates the interests that drove treaty-making: corporate and individual profit, political ambition, and assimilationist assumptions of cultural superiority. Case provides a comprehensive study of the treaty signers, exposing their business ties and multigenerational interrelationships through birth and marriage. Taking Minnesota as a case study, he describes the groups that shaped US treaty making to further their own interests – interpreters; traders; land speculators; bureaucrats; officeholders; missionaries; and mining, timber, and transportation companies.“Although it may challenge the narrative you’ve been taught, it is important to acknowledge the sad truths behind American history,” says Colin Mustful in a book review on the website historythroughfiction.com. Case demonstrates to readers “how political and economic systems worked to absorb indigenous lands and resources while creating wealth for a small class of American elites. These elites were the treaty signers—men with political and business interests who manipulated the bureaucratic treaty system for the benefit of themselves and their close friends and family members.”Case has researched the government signers of U.S.-Indian treaties for over a dozen years. Along the way, he served on the design team for “Why Treaties Matter,” a traveling exhibit created by the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, Minnesota Humanities Center, and Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian.
