Did you know there are 20 official wine regions in Italy? While Piedmont and Tuscany get a lot of love, there's so much more out there to explore! Leave your passport at home, but do join us for an evening of great food and even better wine as we explore the region of Italy known as Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Located at the Northernmost point of the Adriatic Sea, Friuli Venezia Giulia is directly to the East of Trentino-Alto Adige and Northeast of Veneto. The region’s name is not derived from its proximity to Venice — the area was known as “Venetia et Histria” in ancient times and was a wealthy province of the Roman Empire for centuries. The area came under the control of nearby Venice in the 15th century, formally becoming part of Italy in 1866.
Split between mountainous terrain at the territory’s Northern Edge and coastal plains at its South, the terroir of Friuli Venezia Giulia is extremely diverse. Much of the winemaking is concentrated in three areas — Collio near the Slovenian border, Colli Orientali along the Adriatic coast, and Friuli Grave further in land near Udine. Asin Trentino-Alto Adige, the winemaking traditions here are more Germanic in their method. Though pre-disposed to the production of great white wine (Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla), some notable red wines (Pinot Noir, Merlot, Refosco, and Pignolo) can also be found.
Luckily for attendees, we've got a very special guest here to guide us in our exploration. Joining us will be none other that sommelier Meredith Sutch who works for local wine importer Tavolo Vigneto. Meredith is a wealth of knowledge and we confidently gaurantee you'll be leaving with a greater appreciation for this far too often overlooked region and maybe even with some bottles to enjoy the next time your enjoying a relaxing summer evening!
Tickets for this event are just $60/person and include not just the wine but a complimenting food pairing with each pour.
