The Franklin River Campaign is an iconic story in Australia’s history, when communities came together to protect a wild river from the damaging impacts of a massive dam.

Join us for a CAFNEC-hosted screening of Franklin: A Journey to the Past, A Quest for the Future (2022), which follows Oliver Cassidy as he retraces his late father’s 14-day expedition to join the blockade that helped save what is now a World Heritage-listed national park from destruction in the early 1980s.

While the Franklin River was saved, the pressures that dams pose are still a present threat in Australia. Here in Far North Queensland, the proposed Lakeland Irrigation Scheme and Palmer River dam pose serious questions about the future of our waterways, ecosystems, and communities.

This film night is both an opportunity to reflect and be inspired and to learn and get involved in the present action. A night to remind us what people power has achieved before, and opening a conversation about what it could achieve again, right here, right now.
