Join us as we embark on this serene voyage through the depths of the human experience, into the origins of life, love and peace.

With local sound angel and qi gong master Renee Cashman supporting in the community space that is Sohma House, this first experience of Mike's in Cairns promises to be something those of a mystical, creative, spiritual or Buddhist persuasion will not want to miss.

Whilst grounded in the traditional foundation of Theravaden Buddhist theory, Mike draws deeply on his own experiences and understanding of meditation, life, awakening and enlightenment to teach directly from the heart. He has been inspired by the Tao te Ching, Zen traditions and the Sufi mystics, giving his way of expression a broad canvas on which to paints his teachings.

What to Expect

Alongside meditation and poetry, you can expect Mike to share personal stories and insights on the spiritual path. Renee will offer sound to tune you to the depths of your body and perhaps a little movement if we find ourselves stiff. There may also be time and space for Q&A if the community desires it.

Mike will also brew you all chai! It is his love language :)

What to Bring

This will be a sitting event. Please bring rugs, mats, bolsters, cushions, chairs - whatever you need to be comfy. And perhaps a couple more, to give the space a lovely, cosy vibe! The more we can adorn the floor with our love, the more it will hold us.

Aside from that, bring some water, a keep cup for chai if you have one, and an open heart ready to receive and be held.

About Mike

Mike hails from the beaches on the Central Coast of NSW, though is a regular in Cairns to see his Dad and is thrilled to be able to connect with and offer something to the FNQ and Cairns community as he plans to spend more time here in the coming years.

He has completed two years of training as a meditation teacher under Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, and is halfway through a further four years of training as a Dharma Teacher with the Insight Meditation Institute. He has been writing poetry for over 10 years, publishes writing on Substack and is working on his first poetic publication. Mike has also served Zen Master and poet Henry Shukman as his Teaching Assistant and Tour/Retreat Manager.

He sits in silence at regular intervals each year either in the Insight/Vipassana or Zen Traditions. He is not connected to Goenka's Vipassana tradition but rather a broad network of Western Insight Teachers with lineages dating back to the Buddha.

Freedom of access to spiritual teachings is important to him and whilst this is not a dana-based (donation) event, he will always offer scholarships where possible. Please email him with the subject "Cairns Scholarship Request", and include a couple of sentences about you, your practice and what contribution (if any) you could comfortably make.
