- **Event Description**: The First Flight Society has announced their annual celebration of National Aviation Day, the 87th anniversary, will take place at Dare County Regional Airport (MQI) on Wednesday, Aug. 19.Admission and parking are free at the airport. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is aimed at all ages. The mission of the celebration is to provide a fun and educational experience promoting, honoring, and celebrating the accomplishments of the Wright Brothers and helping educate the world about aviation.This year, the organization is partnering with the Beach Food Pantry to include a food drive for those in need on the Outer Banks. This year has been difficult for food banks, with reduced resources at a time when there is more need for their services.A highlight of the celebration will be flyovers by the Bullseye Flight Team. The day's activities will consist of airplane displays, speakers, exhibitors, and food trucks. Birthday cake and a scavenger hunt are planned as additional fun for the kids Some of the exhibitors include Kitty Hawk Kites, Outer Banks History Center, College of the Albemarle, Outer Banks Forever, The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau and Dare County. There will be several aircraft on display from many eras of flight.The event will also act as a Fly-In. Pilots are encouraged to fly into MQI and show off their planes. The first 30 pilots to fly in will receive a $100 fuel voucher. All pilots will receive a recognition certificate.National Aviation Day is also Orville and Katharine Wright's birthday. Former president Franklin D. Roosevelt created National Aviation Day, deciding for the first time in 1939 that the nation should celebrate the growth and advancements being made in aviation.
