I may not be a pilot, but we are doing a play called SKY KING, written by Jameson L. Black, about the 2018 “Sky King,” Richard “Beebo” Russel, and our director suggested we reach out to local pilots. We know Beebo’s plane theft kick-started a lot of change in the aviation industry, and that there might be interest in seeing a play that honors his memory.

Note from the playwright:

“Sky King follows the story of Richard "Beebo" Russell on the day he decided that "the sky's no limit" and stole a Q400 Airplane from the Seattle-Tacoma Airport. The story, told through the perspective of an Air Traffic Controller, touches themes of self-purpose, freedom, and men's mental health with a script that is deeply emotional, absurd, and humorous. The script is comprised of the words spoken by Beebo and the reactions of pilots, passengers, and locals in the area This gives the show the feeling of a dramatized documentary. This play was written in honor of Beebo, whose willingness to take control of his life by any means necessary has inspired many others to do the same. I know that he inspires me everyday. Fly high, Beebo.” -Jameson L. Black

The Troupe Theatre began as Caelin Whitley's Girl Scout Gold Award project in 2021. She noticed that pre-professional artists in her community were traveling upwards of an hour to have consistent performance opportunities. There were always a surplus of classes, but minimal opportunities to apply classwork.
With the incredible support of her community, students, and professional colleagues (including founding former Artistic Director Alicia Ingersoll), The Troupe Theatre was brought to life.  The Troupe Theatre put up its first show, a new work A Christmas Chaos, in December of 2021. Since then, we've produced Shakespeare, musicals, straight plays, and comedy galore. Our mission is to give pre-professionals the opportunity to get onstage, and to train alongside professional artists within DFW. We have worked with many fantastic artists including Sasha Maya Ada, SMU grad, who recently directed Hairspray The Musical!
