On Remembrance Sunday, the service music will be from the Latin Mass for the dead (Missa Pro Defunctis). Musical settings of these movements are often entitled "Requiem" from the opening words of the text: "Requiem aeternam dona eis domine," ("Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord"). The setting offered this year is Gabriel Fauré's (1845-1924) much-loved Requiem, Op. 48, in the 1893 version for choir, soprano and baritone soloists, chamber orchestra (strings, horns, and harp), and organ.

Fauré was one of the leading French composers of his generation and an influential teacher. His best-known works include Pavane, nocturnes for piano, and the song "Après un rêve." He held the influential posts of organist at La Madeleine and Director of the Paris Conservatoire.

Fauré's motivations for composing a Requiem are unclear. He wrote of it, "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest."

It was premiered in 1888 at La Madeleine, where he served as organist.
