It is our privilege to invite you to join the 250th Anniversary celebration of American naturalist William Bartram’s visit to the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain and his journey in Louisiana to visit the Mississippi River.

It is the intention of this conference program to honor William Bartram’s visit with a Bartram Conference Trail Marker dedication. In addition, the celebration program shall include presentations describing the pre-Columbian landscape, its people, their relationship with nature and Bartram’s observations as an artist, Naturalist and accurate chronicler of the diverse indigenous plant and human communities of 1775 Southeastern United States.

The narrative of the Pre-Columbian Indigenous Communities and the landscape of Lake Pontchartrain, the forest, agriculture, tools, fiber, shelter, medicine, spiritual relationship with the environment.

10:00 – 11:30 AM William Bartram Arrives in Southeastern Louisiana and Explores the Mississippi River
Charles Fryling, LSU School of Landscape Architecture
William Bartram and shipmates spent the night on a sandy shore near Bayou Lacombe on his quest to visit the mighty Mississippi River, this presentation will describe this exciting chapter of Louisiana history.

11:30- 12:30 LUNCH in the Exhibition Hall

12:30-1:15 Rewilding in Indigenous Communities
Most of the world’s most biologically diverse plant and animal wildlands reside in indigenous communities, an overview of these communities and their efforts shall be explored.

1:15-2:00 The Disappearance of the Long Leaf Range
Latimore Smith, The Longleaf Alliance
An overview of the destruction of the Longleaf Pine range with an emphasis of efforts to reestablish this important ecosystem.

2:00-2:15 Break

2:15-4:00 Exhibitor Round Robin and Q&amp;A
Is it possible to restore fragments of the indigenous forest canopy and biologically diverse ecosystems to provide significant ecological benefits to our growing communities? Who are the organizations and stake holders involved in this effort?
